Week #8 Update – Upper Perk

October 26, 2008

The Upper Perk Mohawks arrived in Kutztown early Sunday morning to do battle with the Cougars beginning at 9AM.  The games were played in reverse order from the normal routine with the midgets playing first.

The midgets players got things quickly warmed up and defeated the Mohawks by a score of 36-0.  The midgets scored 5 touchdowns and made 3 of 5 extra point kicks.  Scoring two touchdowns each was Bryce Galczynski and Nathan Onorofsky.  The other touchdown was scored by Avery Marquis.  Tucker Landis kicked the extra points.  Zach Sessions suffered a leg injury during the game and we wish him well as he recovers.  The win was the third consecutive victory for the midgets who have outscored their opponents by 86-6 during the 3 game win streak.

The mites followed the midgets game and were defeated by a score of 33-0.

The knee highs followed in the final game of the day and also the final home field game of the 2008 KCYFCA season.  The knee high defense spent most of the first half on the field as a result of two fumbles by the offense.  The Cougar defense held the Mohawks to no first downs on their first possession of the half.  However, the Mohawks offense quickly returned to the field as the Cougars fumbled on the their second offensive play from scrimmage.  On the Mohawks second possession they muscled forward in the trenches and drove 40 yards down the field in a 12 play 10 minute scoring drive.  This long drive wore down the Cougar defense, who quickly had to return back to the field following the second Cougar offensive fumble.  The Mohawks then quickly scored on a tiring Cougar defense with a 28 yard run with just 58 seconds left in the half.  The score at the half was 14-0.  The second half kick off was returned to the Mohawk 45 yard line by Brady Tucker.   The Cougar offense then went to work.  A 15 yard pass from Zach Shell to Jonathan Heberlein gave the Cougars a first down at the Mohawk 30 yard line.  Spencer Moyer then ran off tackle for a seven yard gain and Austin Lubak followed with a first down carry.  The resulting next three plays had the Cougars facing a 4th and 1 on the Mohawk 11 yard line.  The next play called was a sweep to the left.  Austin Lubak carried the ball on the sweep all the way into the endzone for an 11 yard touchdown run.  As the second half neared completion the Mohawks ran for another touchdown.  The final score was 20-6.

Blue flags beat Mifflin 26 – 7

October 25, 2008

The rains held off as the Blue flag team took on Mifflin #2 at Mifflin.  The game started quickly as Justin Akers went 75 yards on the first play of the game for a 6-0 lead.  Owen Kulp Would find John Harrison in the end zone on a screen pass for the conversion and an 8-0 lead.  The Cougars went to the half up 8-6.

The second half opened much like the first half. Mason Miller took the hand off from Matthew Hill and rumbled 75 yards and breaking at least 3 tackles for the touchdown.  On Mifflin’s next possession, John Harrison  intercepted a deflected pass to give the ball back to the Cougars.  Mason Miller passed to Ryan Brauer to get the first down, and then the Trevor Davis went off Tackle for 30 yards and a touchdown.  After holding the Mifflin team to no gain, the Cougars got the ball back with under two minutes to play.  Louie Weaver, Owen Kulp and Ryan Brauer moved the ball across mid field, then John Harrison broke loss for a 40 yard touchdown.  The final score was 26 – 7 and improved the blue flag team record to 5W-3L.  Once again the defense was excellent and spread out, with 6 players getting flags.  The blue flags have outscored there opponents by 138-56 this season and have all but locked up the most points scored by a team in the KCYFCA in 2008.

Hey I’m Alright – It’s only a sprain

October 20, 2008

Hey I'm Alright

Asher (AKA “Smasher”) Zettlemoyer leaves the Reading Hospital with a smile.  Giving a thumbs up to his condition is teammate Carson Lutz.  Asher was injured on the second to last play of the Knee Highs game Sunday at Governor Mifflin.  The crowd hushed in silence as Asher was attended to at the 10 yard line and left the field in a stretcher onto the Southern Berks ambulance.  X-rays taken at the hospital were negative and it’s a bad ankle sprain only.

Asher will be on crutches for a week.  We all wish Asher a quick recovery and hope he can get back on the field soon.

Week #7 Update – Governor Mifflin

October 19, 2008

On a bit nippy Saturday night at Shillington, the midgets scored their second consecutive victory by handily defeating the Governor Mifflin 1 varsity team by a score of 28-6.   Touchdowns for the midgets were scored by Tucker Maletta, Nathan Onorofsky, Zach Sessions and Bryce Galczynski.  Bryce scored his touchdown on an interception return.  Bryce had a total of two interceptions in the game.  Tucker Landis was 2 out of 4 on extra points.

On Sunday the knee highs fell to Mifflin by a score of 6-0.  The final score did not reflect the fine offensive performance of the knee highs.  After  the opening kick-off was returned to mid field by Logan Bachman, the knee high offense totally controlled the first half with a total of five first downs using a strong ball control running game.  Mifflin on their only possession in the first half did not record a first down.  On the final drive of the first half the Cougars drove 40 yards and were lining up for a score inside the 5 yard line when time ran out in the first half.  Mifflin received the second half kick off and immediately gained good field possession that the Cougars could not swing back into their favor for the first 20 minutes of the second half.  Mifflin was able to score later in the second half when they took possession of the ball deep in Cougar territory again.  On the next Cougar drive after the Mifflin touchdown the Cougars lost the ball on a fumble.  Mifflin did not rest on the ball and a pass attempt into the Cougar secondary was intercepted by Brady Tucker and returned 30 yards to the Mifflin 25 yard line with 1:10 left to play.  On the next play, a quick pass over the middle from Zack Shell to Brady Tucker gained another 15 yards and had the cougars 10 yards from the endzone.  However, the Cougars ran just one play short of time again and did not get the game tying score.

Following the knee highs, Mifflin defeated the mites by a score of 28-6.  The mites touchdown was scored by Zach Mickey on a 35 yard run.

Flag Teams Homecoming Weekend Results

October 13, 2008

-

Blue Flag team falls to Rising Sun 13-12

After Rising Sun scored on their first possession, Payton Stump lead the Cougars right back, guiding the team to a touchdown on runs by Trevor Davis and Justin Akers.  Then on 4th down John Harrison would run behind the line of Ryan Brauer, Matthew Hill and Louie Weaver and gain 40 yards and a touchdown.  After the half time ceremony, the Cougar defense stiffened and did not allow the Sunners a first down in the second half.  It was truly a team effort on defense as Mason Miller, Louie Weaver, Payton Stump, John Harrison, and Trevor Davis all got flags.  With time running out in the second half John Harrison would run 62 yards for the touchdown,  and with no time on the clock, Justin Akers was stopped 2 yards short of the game tying xtra point.

Gold Flag team defeats Muhlenburg Muhls 6-0

In the first Cougar drive a hand off from Lucas Floyd to Logan Yerger gave the cougars a 57 yard gain.  But the Muhls were able to stop the offense from scoring.  However on the next drive they were not able to stop Tanner Geist as he ran for a 75 yard touchdown.  This put the Cougars ahead 6-0.  This broke the Gold teams spell of not scoring in the 1st half.     The second half was a defensive battle.  The gold team held strong and they were able to preserve the 6-0 win.

  • Logan Yerger 57 yards 2 flags
  • Dylan Moyer 1 complete pass 5 flags
  • Caleb Riegel 15 yards 1 flag

Tackle Teams Homecoming Weekend Results

October 12, 2008

A beautiful fall day for the Kutztown Cougar Youth Football and Cheerleading teams homecoming and the teams put up one win, one tie, and one loss against CCYO.  The organization would like to thank all who helped out this weekend at the Topton parade on Saturday night and/or the games Sunday.

The Midgets showed domination on both sides of the ball and defeated CCYO by a score of 22-0. The Midget offense scored three touchdowns and just missed a fourth TD as they reached the red zone late in the fourth quarter. The key play in that drive was a thirty yard pass completion from Tucker Maletta to Tucker Landis.

The defense forced several turnovers and gave up very little yardage all game to the CCYO offense. Midget touchdowns were scored by Nathan Onorofsky, Bryce Galczynski and Avery Marquis. Tucker Landis also showed a strong kicking ability by adding 2 out of 3 extra point kicks. Extra point kicks are worth two points in Midget football, giving Tucker 4 points for the game.

The Knee Highs locked up in a defensive struggle with CCYO with the final being a scoreless tie at 0-0. The Knee Highs offense moved the ball deep into CCYO territory late in the second half with a long drive but was unable to cross the goal line. During the game the Knee Highs had several pass completions from quarterback Zack Shell. Zack was given time in the pocket to pass the ball with some nice and improved offensive line blocking led by Nate Montanez and Bradyn Kohler.

The Mites were defeated 33-0.  Next week the Cougars head back to Mifflin to do battle with the Governor Mifflin 1 varsity teams.

October 5, 2008

On a damp and cloudy Saturday morning the gold flag team played the Exeter Eagles.  Much like the last three games the Cougars are still looking for a touchdown in the first half.  While the first half again was a defensive battle the second half started with a 45 yard touchdown run from Caleb Riegel.  The defense behind Caleb Riegel and Tanner Geist were again able to shut down the opposing offense.
