October 1, 2011 Cougar Games Recap

by Rachael Hill, Tim Cronrath, Dan Faust, and Laura Miller
The thirty eight miles to the Twin Valley Middle School field felt like a trip to the beach on a beautiful sunny weekend except it wasn’t beautiful and it wasn’t sunny. The roads were jammed with traffic on 422 on the way to Morgantown because it was another day of qualifying for the Auto-Plus National Hot Rod Association at nearby Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, PA. Grey skies were brighter in the early afternoon but by early evening the sky opened up pouring relentlessly on the crowd of spectators, players and cheerleaders under the Saturday night lights of the Twin Valley turf field.
It would be easy to blame the pouring rain as a major factor in the losses the Cougars suffered, but that wouldn’t be true. Twin Valley Raiders have been a force on the field with all of their teams from Knee Highs to Midgets being undefeated coming into these match ups. The Cougar Mites were the only undefeated Kutztown team but they lost 31-0 to the Raiders in the tirade of heavy rain. The Mites missed starters Jake Aston and “Big Ben”, Benny Seyler. Rookie quarterbacks Logan Bachman, Lewis Weaver and Johnny Harrison were unable to get past the Raider defense while the Twin Valley offense was able to score on almost every possession.
On the Twin Valley field, the Junior Varsity (JV) Cougar Mighty Mites held their own against Spring Ford Blue who has already defeated Central Catholic 26-0, Pottsgrove 13-0 and Blue Mountain 19-0 losing only to Coventry 18-14. With a scoreless first half, the Knee High Rams faced the Kutztown defensive wall. The lead went to Kutztown when quarterback Dylan Miller with protection from his line especially Trenton Delp and Spence Morris, was able to make a 27 yard touchdown run. With little time left on the clock, the Rams were able to make a 65 yard run on their own possession leaving the score tied 6-6 at the buzzer. Coach Tim Cronrath was proud of his team, “They did a stellar job holding Spring-Ford to one touchdown. We were only one play away from victory.”
The Varsity Cougar and Raider Mighty Mites did not allow much movement of the ball in their match up either. Spared rain during their game until the final three minutes, the Cougar defensive line with Ethan Groff, Matthew Hill, Mason Kleinsmith, and Spence Morris stood strong. Lineman Carson Sheetz had an excellent game making several key tackles but Twin Valley broke through in the last two minutes of the game. According to Cougar Mighty Mite Coach Dan Faust, “Our defense has turned around. They had given up three or more touchdowns per game in the last three weeks, but they held Twin Valley, the top ranked team in the league to only one, last minute touchdown.” (Twin Valley’s Mighty Mites toppled Fleetwood 7-0, Penn Alscace 34-0 and Oley 19-0.)
The evening ended with the Cougar Midgets suffering with more player injuries requiring the game to be called at half time with Twin Valley up 31-0. This ended Twin Valley’s busy day hosting different teams. According to one of their coaches, they have been hosting football games for two other schools whose fields were flooded with all the continued rain.
Meanwhile, the Kutztown Blue and White Flag teams combined forces to pounce on the Hamburg Hawks at the Hamburg field under the lights on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 6 pm. Each time the Cougars scored, the Hawks answered with a touchdown of their own. Mitchell Miller scored with two long run touchdowns. Wyatt Slostad scored with a 75 yard touchdown with wing man Mitchell Miller blocking for him. Daniel Franzone had an impressive 7 defensive flag pulls for the game. Both teams played awesome as the game came to a close. Hamburg held Kutztown as the clock ran down and the Cougars gave one last effort to score but to no avail.

Thick clouds earlier in the day smoldered into 81O indian summer humidity as Kutztown Youth Football hosted Schuylkill Valley at the Kutztown Park on Sunday, September 25, 2011. Clayton Cadwallader hiked to quarterback Titus Faust who handed off to Ryan Brauer, Cole Gailing and Payton Stump helping the Cougars move up the field. The Panther’s own penalties also helped the Kutztown Mighty Mites move deeper into Schuylkill Valley territory, but the clock ran out to end the first half with the Cougars holding the Panthers to one touchdown. Ryan Brauer, Jason Heffner and Matthew Hill played strong defense, each getting several tackles. But, by the second half the Panthers were making all the offensive movement and the Cougar defense fell short. Kutztown Mighty Mites lost to Schuylkill Valley 0-19 with the Panthers scoring in the last 40 seconds of the game leaving the Kutztown Mighty Mites with a 0-2 losing season for league play.
For the Cougar Mites players, coaches and fans, hearts were pounding as they faced a losing game at half time. The turnaround came as the Mites defensive line came to life in the second half. The defense was led by lead tacklers Caleb Reigel, Jeremiah Olimpo, Christian Reppert and Logan Bachman. Corner backs Justin Akers and Mason Miller did an outstanding job containing the Shuylkill Valley outside running game.
The Cougar Mite offense dominated the second half as Logan Bachman helped open up the lane for running back Lorencz Jean-Baptiste. Jean-Baptiste scored all four Cougar touchdowns with over 120 yards in rushing and receiving. He made two interceptions, running one back for one of those touchdowns which happened in the final minutes of the game leaving the score 24 Cougars, 13 Panthers. According to Mite Coach Troy Riegel, “This win was a total team effort and I’m really proud of the team stepping up their game when we needed it in the last two quarters.” The Cougar Mites have two wins and are undefeated in league play.
The roller coaster continued for the Cougar fans as the Midget game started. With the highs and lows of the Mighty Mite and Mite games, spectators next saw what happens to a team riddled with injuries. Quarter after quarter ticked by and the Cougar Midget defense was unable to stop the Panther run and aerial assault. With little forward momentum of the ball, the Midgets suffered a crushing 47-0 loss to Schuylkill Valley.
The Cougar White Flag team played away at Twin Valley on Saturday. With only 7 Cougar players against 8 Raiders, the Flags still had a really good game. Tyler Aston and Wyatt Slostad made several good flag grabs on defense. Aston also scored the lone touchdown while Cole Miller and Daniel Franzone had several long runs. Blake Nolte and Colin Hamm shared the quarterback duties and Andrew Schell helped to block. Coach Charlie Pratt is extremely proud of his young players performance especially being one player down.
Junior Varsity Mighty Mites Saturday game against Boyertown was canceled. They will be hosting Spring-Ford at the Kutztown Park next Saturday, October 1, 2011. Cougar Varsity teams also have a Saturday away game matching up against Twin Valley while the Cougar Flag team faces Hamburg.

Spring-Ford was a tough competitor, but remember that these were non-league games which will not affect the 2011 Berks Area Football League standings.

Spring-Ford Overpowers Kutztown
Ryan Brauer carries the ball for the Mighty Mites at Spring-Ford
Gorgeous sunshine and fabulous football weather were the backdrop for youth varsity football at Spring-Ford’s home turf in Royersford, PA on Saturday, September 18, 2011. It was a sweep for Spring-Ford’s (http://www.s-fyouthfootball.com) powerhouse teams who defeated Kutztown Cougar’s Mighty Mights 25-6, Mites 39-6, and Midgets 47-0.
Veteran Mighty Mite, Ryan Brauer, (pictured above carrying the ball) scored a touchdown on a 60 yard run pushing past the Spring-Ford Gold defenders breaking a couple of tackles before he broke free. Scoring for the Mites was Lorenz Baptiste who made a 55 yard run back on the kick off late in the first quarter.
Spring-Ford school district of 7,386, K-12 students enables the Rams to have two varsity and two junior varsity teams for each of their Mighty Mites/ Knee Highs, Mites and Midgets. Kutztown’s pool of 1,558, K-12 students (who also have the choice to play fall baseball, soccer and other fall sports) affords the Cougars a single varsity team for each of the Mighty Mites, Mites and Midgets and one Junior Varsity (JV) squad for the Mighty Mites. The two Cougar flag teams are a good sign for the future.
Luckily Spring-Ford was truly out of Kutztown’s league. This would have been a bye week for the Cougars, but this non-league game was scheduled to give players play time. These losses won’t go against Kutztown’s Berks Area Football league record, so the undefeated 2010 Mighty Might Kutztown players that moved up to the Mites team still have a chance to move toward another undefeated season.
The Spring-Ford Rams are in the Reading Berks Football League (http://www.eteamz.com/RBYF) which is comprised of Boyertown, Coventry, Exeter, Governor Mifflin, Muhlenberg, Reading Youth Football, Rising Sun, and Upper Perkiomen schools that are in Berks, Chester and Montgomery counties. Kutztown plays for the Berks Area Football League (http://berksareayfl.com) playing Blue Mountain, Central Catholic, Fleetwood, Governor Mifflin, Hamburg, Oley, Penn Alsace, Schuylkill Valley and Twin Valley schools.
The Mighty Mite Junior Varsity team was the highlight of the weekend winning their match up against Schuylkill Valley 27-0. Ethan Groff centered to quarterback Hayden Miller Schaffer who gained yardage with his quarterback sneaks. Adyson Johnson scored on the run and on a pressured pass play while Carson Sheetz ran in two touchdowns and an extra point. Moving the team forward with his long runs was Lenin Neiman who helped rack up the teams 227 yards rushing. Holding the line were Clayton Cadwallader, Remington Kistler,Jack Kornfeind Spencer Morris, and Jacob Rabert. The team looks forward to their match up against Boyertown next Saturday.
In last week’s match ups, the Kutztown Mites had a spectacular 28-0 win against Oley. Scoring for the Mites were Tyler Fisher, John Harrison and Jake Aston. The rest of the the varsity teams suffered losses against Oley: Midgets, 0-27 and Mighty Mites, 6-19. Ryan Brauer ran into the end zone for the Mighty Mite touchdown. The Mighty Mite JV squad fell at their away game to Coventry 0-25. While the Kutztown Flag Gold and White teams don’t keep score, they have a great time playing.
Next Sunday, 9/25/2011, look for the Kutztown Cougar Youth Varsity teams at their home field at the Kutztown park facing off against Schuylkill Valley. Flags play away at Twin Valley on Saturday, 9/24/2011.
Look for the Kutztown Cougar Youth Football and Cheerleading Association showing their community and team spirit at Kutztown University’s “Paint the Town Gold” (http://www.paintthetowngold.com) event which runs from September 21 -24, 2011.

Times listed are game start times. Please check with your coach to find out the time you should arrive to the field for pre-game warm ups.

Kutztown Mites had a spectacular 28-0 win against Oley. Congrats Coach Troy and team! Scoring for the Mites were Tyler F, John H and Jake. Hope you all are on your way to another undefeated season!
The rest of the the teams suffered losses. Midgets were heavy hit with a 0-27 loss against Oley with many players being injured on different plays. Mighty Mites Varsity suffer a 6-19 loss against Oley. The highlight of the Mighty Mite varsity game is Ryan B’s run into the end zone. Mighty Mite Junior Varsity (JV) team fell at their away game to Coventry 0-25.
While the Flag Gold and White teams didn’t keep score, they had a great time playing. Mitchell M is pictured here running in a touchdown.
Next week the Varsity Midgets, Mighty Mites and Mite teams are up against Springford on their turf on 9/18/11. Flags face off at Fleetwood and JV Mighty Mites are away at Schuylkill Valley. Mark your calendars for September 24, 2011 for Kutztown University’s “Paint the Town Gold”. We’ll be there helping out and showing our team spirit!
